Evaluating the effectiveness of Maintenance Strategy

Overview of what we want to discuss with you.

It's been a long time since my last entry in English. This is like an exercise for me to polish my English. If you have any suggestion or advice or comment, please do so, I would be very pleased with your feedback.

I want to share with you the group discussion in my MBA class at UTeM. The slides were prepared for the Strategic Technology Management class last night.
Sorry if the downloading time takes a few minutes.

It's well known that every manufacturing company must have a Maintenance Strategy to ensure that they survive in business. So, why the heck these researchers researched on things that is already well-known? Well, our group understand that this paper is not investigate about Maintenance Strategy itself, but more on the evaluating part. How do we measure the effectiveness of a Maintenance Strategy.

The evaluation was developed based on Hayes and Wheelwright's 4-stages framework (1984).
In our own word:
Stage 1- Company outsources more of its maintenance work, they rely heavily on the supplier.
Stage 2- Company compare the maintenance that they should do with their competitors.
Stage 3- Company integrate the maintenance work in their overall strategy.
Stage 4- Maintenance considerations are incorparated in major investment decision, also as a potential source of a competitive advantage.

Why is this evaluation of Maintenance Strategy important? We have a general assumption that Maintenance Strategy is only to do corrective / preventive action in repairing machine / production line breakdown. However, the potential of Maintenance Strategy is huge, maintenance is not only to ensure the company survival, but also to enhance greatly the company's competitive advantage.

I hope that we can benefit from this simple entry. I am still in learning process.

If you want to have a softcopy of the journal that our group have discussed, you can download it here.

Thanks for reading.
