Promoting Safety and Health (Chapter 12)

Overview of what we discuss in Chapter 12.

Last week in 'Managing Human Side of Technology', we discussed several important questions regarding Safety and Health of employee at workplace. One of the critical question is, do the employer really care about the employee Safety and Health if it involves a big amount of spending?

In my own opinion, the employers care about their employees' safety and health at workplace, however another question come up for us to ponder upon, how many % of the employee at the workplace know their right? The rules and regulation are there, but the employee doesn't really know about it.

In most cases, at a dangerous workplace e.g; laboratory, employer already provide the safety equipment to employee, and the guidelines to follow. It becomes a big problem, when the employee take things for granted in this safety and health at workplace. Employees don't really take it seriously about their safety.

From the health perspective, stress at workplace is a big issue in many organization. Several tips to reduce stress in organization :
  1. Build rewarding relationships with coworkers.
  2. Talk openly with managers or employees about job or personal concerns.
  3. Prepare for the future by keeping abreast of likely changes in job demands.
  4. Do not greatly exceed your skills and abilities.
  5. Set realistic deadlines; negotiate reasonable deadlines with managers.
  6. Act now on problems or concerns of importance.
  7. Designate dedicated work periods during which time interruptions are avoided.
  8. When feeling stressed, find time for detachment or relaxation.
  9. Do not let trivial items take on importance; handle them quickly or assign them to others
  10. Take short breaks from your work area as a change of pace.
So, what we can learn from this short  discussion? If we are the employer, it is our responsibility to make sure we provide all the necessary thing to avoid any mishap in the workplace, employee is the most valuable asset. If we are the employee, we must take proactive measure to equip ourselves, so that we know our rights and exercise the correct action when it comes to ensure safety and health at workplace.

Talent management.

Do we look talented?

In today's business environment, there's a huge gap in power distance. The competition to get talented workers becomes more aggressive. Recruiting these talented workers is a very serious thing and to retain these talented workers is another thing to look into.

In Japan, job-hopping culture among the workers is not a normal thing there. The Japanese will work with a company until he reach retirement age. How true is this? (I got to search more in the internet, this claim is quite loose without strong reference).

Another point to ponder about talent management is to ask ourself "Are we talented?" "Has any other company offer us a job?" Hmm.. As far as I'm concerned, I haven't yet get any offer from other company, the most I get is being nominated to be a reserve candidate for Science Officer position in UKM. Excellent question for self-check right.

If we are the Human Resource manager, we should follow this principles.
Base on Marriot's Recruitment Principles.
1 - Get it right the first time.
2 - Money is a big thing, but...
3 - A caring workplace is a bottom-line issue.
4 - Promote from within.
5 - Build the employment brand.

Would we be considerate enough to help our employees to grow and nurture their talent. Do we concern to even help them with their career path. Dr. Azam said that a research shows that most workers will be in a different field of work when compare to their background after three years of employment. (I'm unable to get this claim supported).

Group Presentation.
The group presented last night was consisted of Bro Zainal, Kak Gie and Kak Eza. They talked about talent management and they stress these points in talent management.

  • Spot
  • Selection
  • Assessment
  • Development
  • Progression
  • Retention
Case Study.
The topic selected by Kak Eda, Mastura and Amalina was Sexual Harassment. A very interesting topic to discuss. In reality, it will be a big challenge to handle the sexual harassment case.

To conclude last night class, Knowledge is power, but I think, application has the greater power.
